Day 15 Blog

Comment on some of the following quotes regarding cell phone addictions:One in six young adults could be addicted to their mobile phones, research suggests. A study of the mobile phone use of more than 100 students showed a large proportion exhibited symptoms more usually associated with compulsive gamblers. Many were so attached to their mobile that they relied on it to lift their mood, resorted to lying about how much they used it and regularly borrowed money from friends and relatives to pay their bills. The symptoms could be even worse for younger teenagers than those studied. While most of us are "addicted" to our mobiles, apparently some have it so bad that they're receiving treatment. Two children (ages 12 an 13) were admitted to a mental health clinic to cure what's been labeled as cellphone addiction. From the Telegraph:They were brought in after spending an average of six hours a day on their phones, talking, texting or playing games.Their parents became concerned that the children, aged 12 and 13, were unable to carry out normal activities without their handsets. They were failing at school and deceiving relatives in an attempt to obtain more money for phone cards.According to the doctors on staff, it's the first time that a "specific" treatment has been used to cure mobile phone addiction. Then again, these are children who are 12 and 13. They seem a lot more like two kids distracted from their school work than strung-out junkies begging for quarters at the side of the road so that they can get their next fix."They both showed disturbed behaviour and this exhibited itself in failure at school. They both had serious difficulties leading normal lives."Both children had had their own phones for 18 months and were not controlled by their parents."One paid for their phone by getting money from the grandmother and other family members, without explaining what they were going to do with it," said Dr Utgès.At least two cases of phone addiction have been reported in Britain where young people who were obsessed with their phones and became depressed when the number of incoming calls or messages dropped.Comment on your beliefs behind cell phone addictions.

Day 14 Blog

Watch this video clip on how far technology advanced from the era of the "scroll to the book". Think of what a new concept this must have been and how frustrating it may have been for some. 100 years later, can you relate the era of "hard copy print to electronic version". Where are your parents at with technology? Do they have a facebook account, an email account, a wiki space, a blog, are they on MSN or know how to log onto any of these applications. Do your parents read the newspaper on-line, or use google to research information. Do your parents use "snail mail" with a postage stamp or rely on their email account to stay caught up with friends and family? Comment on your parents' comfort level when it comes to technology.
