Day 10 Blog
After reading last day's posts, some good relationships were made between playing video games and an addiction to speed. Obviously the physical signs and symptoms are not the same, but some of you could relate to the "addiction" as well as the "good feeling" you get while playing the games. Consider this: "Cyberaddiction is developed through the use of the computer. Let's specify that it is not the computer we are addicted to; rather we are addicted to the experience we have because of the machine...In the same way drugs and alcohol can be , the computer becomes a way to escape reality, deny problems, or forget about them by devoting time to something else." (Jean-Pierre Rochon, Internet Addiction psychologist). Comment on this psychologist's research.

i think thats all true. its not the computer its what we use on the computer although some people dont play games on the computer but there are other kinds of addictions, like msn, facebook..
Well the comment does make sense i guess. It's just something you normally wouldn't think about. Like on why you like the computer or why you like video games or why you like drugs and alcohol. Some people have no thought to it and they just do it because they want to.
I think after you do play anofe video games you do get in to the game and can be addicting by what it has in the games and the experiance that happens in the game the same way the drugs do.
I think the psychologist's research is very accurate because some of the people that i know that play a lot of video games are always doing things to escape reality.
I think that it is true for some people that they like to play video games for the experience that they get from playing the video games. I think that they do play video games to deny their problems that they have. Instead of fixing their problems.
After playing video games or being on the computer for a certain amount of time you might not feel the same. Of course drugs don't have the same effect on you. Not everybody uses drugs and alcohol to escape problems or whatever else is listed there. Some people use the computer as a pass time. Addiction doesn't seem logical to happen with a computer or video games. It's not like someone is going to go through withdrawl like with drugs if they don't have it. I do not believe this psychologist's research about addiction to computers and video games.
i think that the quote is true.
I do believe what Jean-Pierre Rochon is saying because some people play video games somuch that they are "living" in the gaming world. Sometimes people like the game world more then reality.
Many people may be addicted to the computer and it becomes reality to them. Some people don't even have a life outside of the cyber-world and that is just stupid because people need to have real conversationa and social stuff.
I think that the quote is not really true, because a person can't be addicted to experiences on computers. Some people just use it for business purposes, and to play games. But nobody can really be addicted to "experiences" from the computer. Some people just choose to go on a computer if they are bored, or need something to do. Nobody can be really "addicted"
In some ways thats true because video games or computers can be very addicting. once they play video game once and like it they could want to do it again like drugs.
I think that the statement by the psychologist is very true and a lot of kids now a days use computers to escape reality. The difference between video games and drugs are that in drugs you actually get an addiction through the chemicals and it gets you hooked. Where as with video games you get addicted through the good feeling of playing the games.
I think that this statement is very true because alot of people i know play alot of video games. They like the feeling that it gives them to be addicted to the video game, just like people doing drugs or alcohal. They like the feelin that the chemicals do to them so they do it over and over again just like playing the video games day after day.
I am not addicted to a computer because i don't own and i don't know how to work one. If people are addicted to a computer to escape reality, deny problems, they must have a problem.
I think Cyberaddiction is developed from the rush from playing consoles to computers. Because you are seen as someone that plays the game not what relates to you in real life. People might want to escape from the real world and be a diffrent person realted on skill. But most game addictions are from the rush of killing someone or your car exploding.
I think that this is true because I have a couple friends that play video games almost everyday. So I think that they like to be getting the feeling of the drug because they are constantly playing and not caring about anything else.
Well I do see the phychologists points. I have to say that it is not always the experience that we encounter, but you do find it as an excape. A way to deny the problems you face in this life. You just want a momemnts peace from the thoughts that plague your mind all throughout the day and night. These kids just want an escape from all horrors and pain of the world and life. (Eg. The way war haunts just about every nation.) Why can't we give them a healthy way to do that?
I would say I would much rather my friends and children to be addicted to video games than experimenting with the effects of drugs and alcohol. Though it may have to be monitored becuase with the all addictions it is hard to veer away from such things after you are addicted.
I think that sports are a very good release for young people. You get the excercise and you can blow off some steam and excess anger and emotions. If you put yourself in the game then it could be just as you are playing on the television/computer.
I don't believe you can compare having the same 'experiance' or 'feel' of using the computer lots, to the abuse of drugs and alcohol. Two completely different things. You are intoxicated when you are abusing drugs/alcohol, you aren't while you are using the computer. Using the computer is like reading a book, it's just something to do. Are psychologist going to compare the 'feeling' of when you read to when you use drugs or alcohol. But ofcourse, some people do use the computer more than they should, and they probably enjoy being on it, but I just think comparing the 'experiance' to drugs and alcohol is over-rated, or overlooked.
i think that some people could be addicted to computers and games and stuff just like booze and drugs. your body wants to escape somewheres and the only place it can is with the help of those things. and i think video games and computers are a bit safer then drinking or smoking up. but it is still not a good alternative.
I think that is true about the computer because if we did not like the experience that we get on it then we would not want to go on it if there was nothing we get enjoyment out of.
That makes sense that you can escape from all those things when you play video games just like you can when you do drugs or alcohal and stuff. But i still dont believe that video games can mess up your brain as much as drugs can
This could be true. Rank gamers can not stop gaming most of the time because they enjoy it so much. Video games are fun but i didnt no it was as addicting as drugs or alchohol. That is intense.
This is a true statement because you become addicted to what you are actually doing on the computer as opposed to the computer itself because really the basic computor isnt really that interesting without the things you use it for. its just like drugs you can't become addicted to them if you don't try them the only way is if you use them. The last part when it says going on the computor is true it's used to past the time leave the real world for awhile forget about everyone and everything around you like for example if you get into a fight with your best friend you may choose to start drugs because it makes you feel better or go on the computor to play games to leave your mind for a little while.
yeah I think the experiance is the addiction beacause when I play video games I feel like I'm the character when I play I even make stratagies to do a mission If it is the type of game that has like super attacks I'll say what they say while their doing their attack so I'm addicted to the experiance of the video games not the game.
I get what hes saying how it is a simmilar addiction or feeling of using drugs. I think it possibly could be a healthier addiction then doing all types of drigs and alchohal.
I believe it is a way to get away from reality and its fine to play video games or go on the computer once you have nothingelse to do. It does not really relate to a drug that you can really smoke but the video games are addicting so that is a type of a drug.
I think that the psychologists research is accurate in some ways, because that is part of the reason why people use drugs and alcohol because they dont like the way they feel without it and it helps them escape reality, which can be abuse or troubles in your everyday life. The same goes with video games because you can be someone/something you're not and you live the life you've always wanted, or just your beleifs, if you beleive in dragons and you've always wanted to be a dragon rider and the actual dragon itself, you can be it in the game.
i think that people dont get addicted to using a computer or using drugs right at the beginging i think that they just like the feeling that they get. After you start do use a computer or do drugs all the time then you start to get addicted and cant stop.
yah i guess that the computer is something you can go to escape reality and is kind of something like drugs and alcohol when you get the good feeling from the games on the computer.
i think that some people are just addicted to the fellings and experience that they have when they use the computer like when someone is addicted to drugs or alchol and not so much the fact that they are addicted to the computer its self just the stuff they do on it.
I think this scientists knows where its at the only way a computer can be addicting is the things you do on them like games programs and tools obviously what the reasearcher is trying to describe. The things we do on computers seem more entertaining than say going outside and playing a sport or something. This is a sign that people are getting lazy because having a computer means easy access to do what ever you want. I still thinks going outside and finding something else to do is betterrr.
People can get addicted to computers just like the drugs and alchohol because they want to escape the reality of the real life where something is wrong.
I don't think the two experiences are even close to being the same. there's no "rehab" for computer addicts that lasts for many months like with alcohol and drugs. It's not a harmful experience its just something people do to pass time, business, hobbies, etc.
