Day 15 Blog

Comment on some of the following quotes regarding cell phone addictions:One in six young adults could be addicted to their mobile phones, research suggests. A study of the mobile phone use of more than 100 students showed a large proportion exhibited symptoms more usually associated with compulsive gamblers. Many were so attached to their mobile that they relied on it to lift their mood, resorted to lying about how much they used it and regularly borrowed money from friends and relatives to pay their bills. The symptoms could be even worse for younger teenagers than those studied. While most of us are "addicted" to our mobiles, apparently some have it so bad that they're receiving treatment. Two children (ages 12 an 13) were admitted to a mental health clinic to cure what's been labeled as cellphone addiction. From the Telegraph:They were brought in after spending an average of six hours a day on their phones, talking, texting or playing games.Their parents became concerned that the children, aged 12 and 13, were unable to carry out normal activities without their handsets. They were failing at school and deceiving relatives in an attempt to obtain more money for phone cards.According to the doctors on staff, it's the first time that a "specific" treatment has been used to cure mobile phone addiction. Then again, these are children who are 12 and 13. They seem a lot more like two kids distracted from their school work than strung-out junkies begging for quarters at the side of the road so that they can get their next fix."They both showed disturbed behaviour and this exhibited itself in failure at school. They both had serious difficulties leading normal lives."Both children had had their own phones for 18 months and were not controlled by their parents."One paid for their phone by getting money from the grandmother and other family members, without explaining what they were going to do with it," said Dr Utgès.At least two cases of phone addiction have been reported in Britain where young people who were obsessed with their phones and became depressed when the number of incoming calls or messages dropped.Comment on your beliefs behind cell phone addictions.

I believe that it is possible to get addicted to cell phones. My best friend is always texting on his phone. It almost seems like he doesn't have a life anymore. I personally do not have a phone and i don't really want one if i would get addicted to it. I believe a cell phone should be used for emergencies and only sometimes for leisure

I think some people take cell phones a bit too seriously. Like if you want to talk to someone so bad, make plans with them and hang out with them in the real world. I have a phone but when i use it i use it to find out information like if i missed an assignment of something or to get a hold of my parents. Most of all i use it to get together with my friends in the real world, because the more you text someone, the less you have to tell them when you see them.

I didn't know you could actually be addicted to your cell phone, I just thought you wanted to use it most of the time to stay connected with friends. But being put into a mental institution because they are clinically "addicted", thats just nonsense. I have my own cell phone and I do use it alot but I do not believe I could ever be put in an institution for being addicted.

I think that cell phone addictions are stupid because I have a cell phone but I only use it when I need it or eles I never use it at all. Alot of kids use there cell phones way to much but thats wha they like to do, so who am i to judge them

I think that cell phones are useful but I don't think that they should be used to much or to often. I don't personally have a cell yet but I want one. Some people use there phone to contact people and arrange things, others used it as entertainment.

I think that this whole addiction stuff is a lie. Thats only two people in the millions of people that use them that they say are "addicted". I do not think they are addicted but i think they have some kind of disorder. I personally have a cell phone and am not addicted and i do not know of anyone that is. I see many people using them all the time and I do not think they affect there lives by using them.

I think cell phone addiction is pretty crazy considering, how many people have cell phones. I dont have my own cell phone, because my parents dont think im responsible enough for a phone. I see alot of people in our school always checking their phones, but most of my friends still use their phones in or out of class and still passing.

Cell phone addictions are stupid cause its not something you need all the time. If 1000 people were texting you everyday then you might get addicted cause you are responding to them back. I think cell phones are nice to stay in touch with other people but you don't need to text them in school you can just go see them on your break. I have a cell but I barely use it in school.

I believe that cell phone addiction is ridiculous. I guess I can'treally comment on this because I myself do not own a cell phone. On the other hand my sister has a cell phone. Although she isn't allowed to take it to school she checks it first thing when she gets home. I have also noticed thing through friends. They also check their cell phones very frequently. Some rush out of class or leave the class so that they can check their phones.

I think that people should only get a cell phone when they start grade nine. I think it should be that way because then you would have more responsibility and you could get a job to pay for the phone bills. For my phone I had to get a job to pay for a phone card every month because my parents said they would only pay for the first bill when they got it for me. That was a good idea because then if i don't have enough money for my phone card I can't use my phone any more till i can get one.

I think that this is quite severe that two kids who are only twelve and thirteen have been addicted to cell phones. I have my own cell phone but I don’t think that I would ever get addicted to it. At school whenever class is over I usually see people pull out there phones and text or call someone. I think most people aren't addicted to their cell phones but there are probably a lot of people in this world that are.

I think having a "cell phone" addiction is kind of crazy. I have my own cell phone, but im not addicted to it, I only use it when I need to. My parents dont really care about cell phones.

I think that cell phone addiction is only a problem in people that would already have a mental disorder; it is just another means of expressing this disorder especially in a young child because they might not be able to get drugs, alcohol or other addictions. I also think that parents should not give a child a cell phone until you are at least fourteen. From personal experience being thirteen or even twelve years old don’t need a phone. It is not needed because they haven’t reached a social stage were it is more useful.

I think cell phone addictions are stupid, every child knows that you have to get out and do more then just text. Most people who don't get out are probably the kids who don't have very many friends and don't like doing activities with other people. I have my own cell phone but I am not addicted, when i am at home most of the time my phone is in my room. Alot of the students in this school have cell phones and most of them between class have to check them.

I think cell phone addictions are dumb. If the people that have these can't understand that there cell phone is a tool not way of life then they shouldn't be allowed to have one. I have a cell phone and I'm not addicted to it. If I can control myself then why can't they. If the children that are having these addictions have a phone they should probably be taken away. It's a lot cheaper and a better way to get them off the addiction than therapy.

darienk said...

I think this is really stupid because how can you get addicted to a cell phone it's really not that fun or seem like it can be addicting. I think these two kids didn't mean to get "addicted" they probably just saw their older siblings using them and thought that they needed to do it just like them and it got implanted intheir brains, thus creating an addiction.

My beliefs on cell phone addictions are that if you use it all the time, you will become addicted, and if you try to stop useing it, it will be hard to stop.
I have a cell phone, but i dont use it to much.

i dont think you can really get addicted to cell phones people jsut say th are but there not really if you take there phone away for like 2 weeks they will be fine.

Cell phone addiction is not really being addicted to youre cell phone, it's more so the people you talk to or just wanting to get out of class. It is popular in all ages that have a cell phone. The cell phone is like a source that they use to get away. Getting the money for the cell phone is really something that you need to do yourself and not from others. To solve this problem it looks like poeple are trying to stop this by taking away their phones or diabling it but the most effective is where the rest of the cell phone users dont use it either, it's peer pressure.

Since I dont have a cell phone I don't know how addicting they can get so I'm not sure if you should get treatment or what. If this story is true then I guess cell phone addiction is real and that teens get addicted to their cell phones. Ive seen a lot of people on their cell phones for a long time but i dont think their addicted to it.

I don't have a cell phone, but I think that kids that do have one are crazy about it because they need there cell phone just to calm them down, and to make them happier. It also distracts them from school, friends and family members.

I think that having a cell phone is a good thing but not if you over use it. Its okay if you use it in moderation. I know lots of people that have phones and still are passing their grades. I have a cell phone and are still active in lots of sports. Im shocked by how many people are addicted to their cell phones.

I have a cell phone, and i don't need mental help cuz thats just messed and i think that addictions of cell phones shouldn't be this bad cuz i probally spent lots of time on my cell phone and im not addicted. Maybe the reason why some kids get addicted is beacuse they spent wy to much time.

Janeen D said...

I believe that kids around our age is getting to addicted to cell phones where they will be needing treatment next. Once you have a cell phone you start to learn more things about it and it gets alot of fun and is hard to stop using. i do have a cell phone but i dont use it rarely.

This is just silly, if your addicted to your cellphone your insane. Their is possibly no reason to be addicted to it seing as there is only a few things to do on it and those things you can only doe for a little bit and not stedily. If my kid had a cellphone addiction i would punch them in the face, throw their phone of a bridge, cancell their cellphone plan and then after at i'd force them to do something creative instead of being a stupid kid that can't hand in his homework because he is epic fail at life and is addicted to a cellphone.

well I don't hava cell phone YET! But I think that some people are not addicted its just that maybe ther're just bored

Thats bad for a 13 and 12 year old to have addictions to a cell phone. I also see a lot of people talking on their cell phones while driving or during breaks at work or school. I think its important to stay connected with friends but having to go to a mental institute for using your cell phone isnt very good.

I think that getting addicted to your cell phone would be really crazy because then it would mean you would like live of your cell phone. I myself have a cell phone and I can say I am not addicted to my cell phone because if I got it token away I would be fine without it.

I have a cell phone but I dont think im addicted to it. Everyone knows you have to go do stuff with your friends. There may be some people who are addicted to there cell phones, but most people I know dont. I use my cell phone lots, I use it to get ahold of my parents, talk to my friends, etc. I think treatment for cell phone addiction is not needed.

Cell phone addiction is a very rare thing i never knew that people were that addicted to it. I just thought that there were people who just needed to use there phone but i didn't know it could hurt them if they didn't. I honestly hate when people are on their phone 24/7, especially when you are trying to talk to them.

I think we can get addicted to our cell phones because its a form of entertainment. I had an experiance with be addicted to my phone at camp. I went for 3 weeks and it wouldnt turn on after the first week. I thought I was goin crazy because I am used to texting, no matter what or where I am. Once I got back from camp in B.C. I took my phone in and got a loaner, I was not addicted since. I didnt think that this issue was this serious. I really hate it when I am with my friend and they are always texting. It's like I am not even with them. My parents think I am responsiable, but some of the people I have seen use there phones irresponsiably. I do think that some people rely on the messages between people as how their mood is going to be. I myself, can say that my mood does change apon the messages and I can become depressed with missing messages or calls.
